Canandaigua Lake

The Canandaigua Lake nestles Squaw Island, one of two islands in the Finger Lakes, in its 429 billion gallons of water. Also known as “The Chosen Spot,” this lake is a source of fresh drinking water for the 48,000 residents of the area. These individuals build fires around the lake each summer in what is called “The Ring of Fire,” a tradition first developed by the Seneca tribe to ensure an abundant harvest.
